The Owl Nest - Urban Homesteading Blog

Miz Owl's approach on small-scale Urban Homesteading (WHOOTHOOT!), Retirement Living (YIPPIE!), Building a Home-Based Business (OY!!), common-sense Simple Lifestyle, finding joy amidst Life’s Chaotic Turmoil’s, and always Pics. Our lives have changed in so many ways since September 2011 … come along with us on our journey forward: we aren’t sure where we will end up, or even what we will be doing month to month; but it will be an adventure as we follow Father’s leading from day to day!

I'M A WILDFLOWER :-)

What Flower
Are You?

My Power Bird Is The Owl: Yeah, I Know!! LOL

Your Power Bird is an Owl
You are beyond wise. You are so smart, you're almost prophetic.
Your inner voice always speaks the truth, and you take the time to listen to it.
You are good at seeing who people are... including the darkness of others.
As a result, you tend to have a rather dark - yet realistic - outlook on life.
What's Your Power Bird?

WINTER TIME IS PERFECT FOR ME

You Belong in Winter
Quiet, calm, and totally at peace...
You're happy to be at home, wrapped in a blanket, completely snowed in
Whether you're lighting a fire or having a snowball fight, you always feel best in the winter.
What Season Are You?
Blogthings: Cheaper Than a Therapist

Neptune Seems To Be My Old Stompin' Ground :-)

You Are From Neptune
You are dreamy and mystical, with a natural psychic ability.
You love music, poetry, dance, and (most of all) the open sea.
Your soul is filled with possibilities, and your heart overflows with compassion.
You can be in a room full of friendly people and feel all alone.
If you don't get carried away with one idea, your spiritual nature will see you through anything.
What Planet Are You From?

Knitted Baby Girl’s Ombre Bonnet & Bootie Set: Cost PLUS $5 Shipping. Available Now :-)
$15.00 - BASE. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. Think spring! This sweet little variegated Bonnet and Booties set is hand-knitted using soft acrylic Baby Yarn in springtime colors - a mix reflecting a robin’s egg blue sky, fluffy white clouds, a warm sunny yellow sun, promising spring greenery, and soft tulip pinks. This yarn is no longer available, so this set is a limited one-of-a-kind set. Tiny knitted cuffed booties are sure to please with their warm yellow garter stitch bootie topped with knit-in 1 x 1 variegated ribbed stocking. The soft color changes are dyed in the yarn, so every sock is a little different while still matching perfectly. The tiny contrasting button trims match the ombre hues reflected in the ribbing. The soft pastel variegated bonnet is worked in a pretty eyelet pattern edged around face and neck with 2 tiny rows of yellow garter stitch. A thin matching yellow double-sided satin ribbon is woven through eyelets in the neckline band to tie gently under baby’s chin. Size: Newborn nwfam3@comcast.net

MASCULINE Knitted Tube Neck Warmers: Cost PLUS $5 Shipping. Available Now :-)
$10.00 EACH - BASE. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. I used red yarn and made one of these tubes for myself last year and I love it! It’s the perfect thing to slip over my head and guard my neck against those cold winter winds that blow off the river and through the slight gap between jacket and hood when it’s time to go outside and tend to my chickens. When the wind is particularly brisk and C-O-L-D, I just pull the top edge up and over my nose and everything is A-okay. These neck warming tubes would be equally welcome on the ski slopes, fishing boat, or walking to and from school. With the purpose of adding something to my inventory for males, I made two tubes up in colors that favor men – one is a vintage striped pattern, the other is more of a bold and trendy casual wear pattern – both will work equally well with men’s outdoor wear. Both are knitted in a 2 x 2 rib stitch pattern using acrylic worsted weight yarn. Machine wash and dry. OUR LIFE TO DATE :-)

I've always been a night owl, and hubby became one when he was working … however, now that we are in full retirement, we find ourselves reverting back to daytime hours. This is different for me as I’ve never been a day person per se; and I guess I am still doing owlish hours as I now find myself up and about in the early dawn hours when the owl mascot for our small spread is softly hoo-hoo-hoot’ing in the Sugar Pine outside our bedroom window. LOL.

Though we live at the junction on the outskirts of two PNW intertwining cities, my husband and I are Urban Homesteaders & Empty Nesters who share our lives with our beautiful & gentle wolf companion, 1 old cat, 1 fat and growing patio pond Koi, and 7 chickens that supply us with fresh eggs daily. We put in a large garden every seventh year; a few years back we had a deer cut right through the corn patch - where it came from or where it went is anyone's guess, but it passed so close to me I could feel it's body heat radiating as it passed by me - a Barred Owl drops in now and then to sit in the Sugar Pine by the Hen Pen, and migrating Mallard Ducks fly in to swim in the annual rain pond next door. We have also had Roosevelt Elk pass through to nibble our tender willow tree leaves, and the fat raccoon family shows up annually to raid the plum tree … and sometimes keep the owl company on its chicken watch.

We are aging hippie boomers who live a Godly lifestyle and try always to do right by our Lord. Sometimes we fail, as is human nature, but that does not stop us from striving to do better and live upright lives. I have recently started mzowl's Halodaze Designs, which is a cottage-type handcraft business I do entirely by hand and market locally; I have added to my Blog a link of a FB Lookbook Catalog Album of my homebased designs for those interested in my work.

I enjoy seeing the cybertraffic on my Blog Traffic Meter, and I hope you have also enjoyed your visit to The Owl Nest and leave a friendly "hi" as you pass by :-)

mzowl’s Holadaze Designs

mzowl’s Holadaze Designs –

I do not create large quantities of items nor do I offer clothing wholesale, so you can be sure your child is wearing something truly special.

My own Original Design creations are original artistic creations not available anywhere else and they are not mass produced, therefore ensuring you a unique and authentic garment - authentic by means of designs made entirely by hand: these items will have a MOD label before the descriptions so that you will know immediately that you are being offered a one-of-a-kind item (OFAK), and sometimes a limited OFAK when the yarn used has been phased out and no longer available to purchase. My line of original creations has an offbeat sense of style and design with unique developments, vivid colors and detailed embellishments. I think you will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed making them. Everything I offer for sale is hand sewn, knitted or crocheted by me in a smoke free home. I give special attention to detail and quality, making clothing that is of gift giving and heirloom quality. Some of my customers have been with me for decades; recipients grow up and keep in touch – requesting a special item for their little ones ... “It’s not a Baby Shower unless ‘Auntie Val’ shows up with one of her creations.” It’s such a privilege to be part of people’s lives in this way. Because I do not like to repeat something already tried and done, usually what I offered is only offered once; when it sells it is no longer available.

Everything I handcraft is made with my own to hands, my steel needles and hooks; reasonably priced to fit any budget; and I always have something in stock because I have my knitting needles and crochet hooks going nonstop from the time hubby leaves for work in the afternoon until he walks back through the door at daybreak. You will find lots of special touches here and there and in unexpected places. I love to personalize my clothing and you never know what you will find! If you personally know me or not, grab a cuppa and join in the public viewing of my handwork items; most custom orders are available for shipment within two to four weeks or less; in-house items that are in stock are ready to ship out immediately. See something you like? Orders can also be placed by phone if you know me and my phone number; or if you are new to viewing my designs, email me at the email here: nwfam3@comcast.net. Either way, just leave me a message of what it is you want and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

NOTE: SHIPPING RATES HAVE ESCALATED SO I HAVE TO ADJUST MY RATES ACCORDINGLY. UPDATES ARE AS FOLLOWS - $5 EXTRA for small items & $10 EXTRA for big items & $15 EXTRA for large items. Sorry, but I have to stay current ...

Cash (for local sales to those who know me personally), personal checks or money orders are the forms of payment. Being a small home-based business, I am not set up for Credit or Debit cards. Items will be shipped as soon as your check clears. A small mailing fee is added to online items; shopping local is cheaper, so come see me at a few of the local Bazaars :-)

MOD - MOSS STITCH & SLIP STITCH RIB SWEATER: Cost PLUS $10 Shipping. Available Now :-)
$20.00 - BASE. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. I designed my baby sweater after a basic baby sweater printed in Vouge Knitting about 20 years ago. I’m all about creativity and individuality, so I reworked the original pattern into a one-of-a-kind personalized creation that offers a modern take on a simple classic. All children are not the same and we don't think they should all dress the same either. This sweater is knitted in one piece from neck down, and my original creation begins at the lower edge of the yoke. I rewrote and worked this sweater in moss stitch and slip stitch rib pattern, which will look sophisticatingly stylish on a newborn baby boy – just the thing to bring your precious one home from the hospital in :-) Every garment I make is designed from start to finish in-house so you are getting a fabulous unique product that is beautifully unique, well made, and affordable. This tiny raised pattern sweater is edged with garter stitch all around and on sleeve cuffs was knitted with soft and supple Baby Sport and closed with 7 small green resin buttons. Machine washable. Unisex Garter St & Eyelet Baby Sweater: Cost PLUS $10 Shipping. Available Now :-)
$20.00 - BASE. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. A Newborn sweater needs two essential qualities: it must to be soft enough to sleep in (car seat naps, stroller naps, love & cuddle naps), and it must be as beautiful as the newborn it adorns. This pretty little garter stitch and eyelet sweater has those essential qualities. I have been making this particular sweater pattern up for well over a decade for various baby shower gifts; and the most recent baby I gifted with it is our 2 year old nephew who wore it home from the hospital after he arrived to bless our family (his was edged in baby blue); it’s a ‘traditional piece’ and always appreciated. It’s timeless. This little white sweater is knitted using Baby Sport yarn in a simplistic garter stitch pattern with strands of very thin shiny yellow satin ribbon threaded through eyelets at the neck and along the yoke for vintage drawstring closure. The sleeves, as well as the entire body of the sweater, are edged in a shell pattern using a shiny-threaded yellow Baby Sport yarn to match the ribbon ties. Very nice. Machine wash and dry. Size: Newborn - 3 months nwfam3@comcast.net

Seeing what mass manufacturing has to offer for babies I personally feel that baby clothing has lost all its traditional creative value as mass retailers cater to miniature versions of adult contemporary clothing. Babies are babies for such a very short period of time and they have the rest of their lives to mimic their parents and peers, so I decided to creatively develop my own range of children’s clothing using God-given artistic talents and Yankee determination to master new skills. All my own original designs (MOD) are appropriately created around making practical one-of-a-kind, handmade, easy to care for baby garments. This little shawl-collared pullover is classic in its simplicity, yet beautiful in design using vintage heirloom pattern stitches. This mint green sweater worked in Baby Sport has a Leaf Rib center panel with Caterpillar Stitch detail on the lower sleeves. Altogether delightful in design, and complementary to baby’s skin tone. $25.00 - BASE. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for delivery. Remaining faithful to my ambition for maximum creativity and minimum pricing, I designed this little baby kimono from start to finish; sketching it on paper in the textured pattern I envisioned, shading it in felt pen in the colors I saw in my mind’s eye, and running it past hubby’s eyes more than once for brutal appraisals before starting to knit it up in the bright colors and the bold and fun patterns which created the interesting textures in a designed creation that I am sure will appeal to the fashionistas as well as the traditionalists. Kimonos are an easy fit for babies – just slip their little arm into the sleeves, wrap the front around to the side and tie it up: easy as 1-2-3! I used worsted weight yarn throughout, in bright and bold colored yarns. The main body of this kimono is knitted in a seeded diamond pattern; it is completely edged in a textured stitch to represent gold-crowned jewels – a bit fanciful for sure, but also a fun element to the finish for your little princess :-) There is an inside turquoise crocheted tie at the underarm – and a bright yellow outside side tie crocheted with a bright red ‘cherry’ tip trim: altogether quite beautiful and simply practical in keeping baby warm and uniquely stylish in this one-of-a-kind garment.
